The raw material production stage is the stage during which the fibers are produced, either by growing plants: natural plant fibers and artificial fibres, or by breeding: natural animal fibres, or by chemical processes: synthetics.

We consider “exotic” all leathers that cannot be by-products of food (shark, snake, lizard, crocodile). The animals used for their furs are: minks, chinchillas, foxes, rabbits, and in some countries, cats and dogs.
